Position Overview: Environmental Engineering and Health Post Doctoral Fellow

The Commercial Building and Indoor Air Quality Group of the Indoor Environment Department (IED) seeks a Post Doctoral Researcher. The person in this role will support research that focuses on the health and performance impacts of commercial building ventilation rates. The Post Doctoral Researcher is expected to understand and carry out project work plans, including written preparation of detailed recruitment and sampling protocols, working with the PI and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Human Subjects Committee to obtain approval of protocols related to human subjects.
 

The successful candidate will also work with the PI to:
• Conduct a stakeholders workshop on ventilation and health study protocol design.
• Develop programmatic protocols for field and laboratory studies.
• Collaborate with a diverse research team members on project, as necessary.
• Play a major role in the development of human subject protocols and shepherding them through proper internal approval processes.
• Recruit study buildings and occupants.
• Implement study protocols, including field site visits and coordination of analytical data and perform complex analysis from the studies.
• Complete chemical analysis of air samples.
• Review data and assure data quality.
• Analyze, summarize, archive and report data on outcomes.

The researcher is expected to take an active role in preparing papers on this research to be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed archival journals. Primary support for this position is from a California Energy Commission project on healthy homes. This project requires that all essential project tasks and reporting will be completed within 2.5 to 3.0 years of the start date of this post-doctoral position.

 


Job Requirements:

Qualifications
• Recent Ph.D. in an area of HVAC Engineering, physical or environmental health sciences that provides relevant technical background to fulfill duties and responsibilities described above.
• Proven experience in building and subject recruitment.
• Relevant experience with experimental research; preferably in buildings and/or involving human subjects.
• Ability to work independently and also to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team, and contribute to an active intellectual environment.
• Ability and initiative to quickly learn technical skills and tools that are required to complete the research.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Self-motivated, responsible and professional attitude; the Post Doctoral Researcher must be comfortable and highly competent at community outreach and interactions with individuals from diverse background.
• Current California driver's license or ability to obtain license (needed to drive to sampling sites throughout California).
• Excellent organizational and operational skills.
• Broad familiarity with computers and software tools on PC-based systems.
• Technical background in HVAC, public health, epidemiology, statistics and exposure science is preferred.
• Technical background in any of the following areas will be valuable: air pollutant dynamics, air pollutant health effects, analytical chemistry, risk assessment, building mechanical systems, environmental and/or regulatory policy.
• Knowledge about indoor air pollutant sources and air cleaning technologies.
• Experience with air pollutant monitoring equipment and chemical analysis techniques for air pollutant quantification is preferred.
• Experience with hazard and risk analysis associated with air pollutant exposures, epidemiological methods, cost-benefit analysis of air pollutant controls and health benefits is preferred.

Notes
This is a one-year appointment that may be renewed annually based upon performance, funding, and continued operational needs.
