Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), a non-profit business association that works with business and stakeholders to create a more just and sustainable world, is seeking an Associate in our Advisory Services practice. BSR's staff of more than 85 at its headquarters in San Francisco and rapidly expanding offices in New York, China, Hong Kong, and Europe, helps its 250 member companies integrate sustainability into business strategy and operations through consulting, research, and convenings.

Position Overview:

The Associate will be responsible for conducting research and analysis, writing, logistics planning and other support on BSR products and services for the benefit of BSR members, funders or other clients. This will include participating in business advisory consulting and training work as required. The position is full-time and will be based in San Francisco, CA.

Responsibilities:

  • Support project managers in implementing advisory services projects with member and other companies, particularly through research, writing and technical assistance on a range of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issue areas.
  • Conduct primary and secondary research and analysis on CSR leadership practices, and emerging issues and trends in the consumer products and potentially other sectors utilizing a wide range of sources, including web searches, interviews and other methodologies.
  • Support advisory services Managers and Industry Directors in the development of work plans, schedules and budgets for the delivery of advisory service projects.
  • Contribute to the content and design of working group meetings, training and workshops, and ensure the accuracy of all materials.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior level staff at BSR member companies and potential member companies, NGOs, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide assistance on special projects and assignments as requested to help BSR accomplish its mission and goals.
  • Other duties as required and assigned by the Managing Director, East Coast. 


Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

NOTE: Only candidates with these specific requirements will be considered:

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant work experience, including knowledge of a CSR content area.
  • Exceptional research and writing skills, and ability to do some preliminary analysis on CSR research.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to meet stringent deadlines, communicate progress on projects or event planning, and work with managers to coordinate multiple projects concurrently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, for working with both internal and external clients.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in supply chain issues and / or environmental issues a strong plus.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, one or more industries a plus - consumer products, transportation, media, financial services, food & agriculture, or ICT.
  • Language skills: in addition to English, fluency in a second language is preferred, ideally French, Mandarin or Spanish.
  • Capacity to work and thrive in a growing, fast-paced, entrepreneurial organization with a collaborative environment.
  • Willingness to undertake business travel (25-50% time).
